There is something to do in London every single weekend of the year. This is a city that truly does not rest. Whether you like art, sports, music or history, you can find something to do in London throughout the year. Some of the London events that take place each year include the Spring Festival and Kew Gardens, the Maypole Dancing in Hyde Park, Regents Park Book Festival and the St. John’s Wood Art Festival.

Spring Festival in Kew Gardens

Kew Gardens is one of the most beautiful public gardens in London and hosts a variety of events throughout the year. In the Spring, Kew Gardens comes alive with a flower show that is truly put on by Mother Nature. The Spring Festival in Kew Gardens starts at the end of April each year and lasts through the end of May. The flowers are in full bloom during this time and on the weekends, refreshments are served and there are talks about how to grow different types of flowers. Anyone who visits England in the Spring should visit Kew Gardens so that they can see the flowers in bloom.

Maypole Dancing In Hyde Park

Hyde Park is the largest park in London and is the central hubbub for everything going on in this city during the summer months. Hyde Park is open all year long and is a park where people can spout off political opinion and often do so in various areas of the park. Maypole dancing in Hyde Park is a tradition that takes place on the first of May each year. Everyone who wants to enjoy this event can join in the festivities and grab onto the Maypole and dance around. Maypole dancing in Hyde Park is an annual event in London that occurs every May first.

Regents Park Book Festival

Regents Park is close to the upscale St. Johns Wood and hosts a book festival in the summer months that is ideal for new authors as well as anyone who wants to buy used books. You never know what type of antiquity you can find when you peruse the book festival at Regents Park during the last weekend of May in London. Anyone who enjoys reading books can enjoy the books festival that is open to the public and totally free of charge. The late spring is an ideal time to walk around Regents Park and the book festival is the ideal place to find books.

St. Johns Wood Art Fair

The Regents Park book festival is in conjunction with the St. Johns Wood Art Fair that takes place the first weekend of June in this area of London. New and existing artists visit this area so that they can enjoy the art from new and well known artists. The art that is displayed in St. Johns Wood is displayed in art galleries and shops that are located in this upscale London neighborhood.

There is plenty to see and do in London, no matter what your tastes. During the summer, you can spend just about any weekend enjoying art, music, books or theater in London as the London events calendars are filled with fun things to do.

The biggest city in England is London. In fact, it is one of the biggest cities in all of Europe. For this reason London is one of the most common tourist destinations in the area. A large amount of people from all over the world travel to London every year to soak up the atmosphere, and check out the great attractions. The fact of the matter is that London is a lot of fun for anybody who visits. Ask anybody who has been to London before, and you will more than likely hear about how much fun they had.

London is one of the most densely populated cities in all of Europe. For this reason the number of different cultures, religions, and beliefs in the area are quite diverse. No matter who you are it is safe to say that you will fit in if you are going to London. In addition, there are over 300 languages spoken by the people who live in London. This makes it very easy on tourists. Of course English is the number one language in the city.

For people visiting London for the first time there are many attractions that are must sees. These attractions are not only the most popular in London, but in the world as well. They include the House of Parliament, Tower Bridge, and Buckingham Palace to name a few. For people that are interested in art, there are two institutions that they will not want to pass up; the British Museum and the National Gallery. If you have time to visit all of these attractions you will definitely feel like your time in London was well spent.

The Greater London area covers 609 square miles; this is one big city with a lot packed into it. The Thames River runs through the city and is common for both recreation and work activities.

When planning a trip to any destination you will need to know what the climate is like; and this definitely holds true when it comes to London. Generally speaking, London gets light precipitation throughout every month of the year. There is really not break to when the rain comes and goes, and snow is very uncommon in the area. If you want to visit London during the warmest month you will want to go in July. During July temperatures can reach the lower 70s F. January is the coldest month in London, and temperatures rarely get above the low 40s F.

There is plenty of transportation in London to get you around from one area to the next. When flying into London you can take advantage of one of five airports. The biggest airport is Heathrow, and it is the busiest airport in the world in terms of international travel. And of course London is home to the London Underground which is the oldest metro system that you will find anywhere in the world.

London is popular among people from one side of the world to the next. There are many attractions to see in London, and the weather is never a problem. The tourism industry in London is definitely safe for the time being.

The London Book Festival chose an unlikely book for its 2009 Grand Prize Award, Stan Goldberg’s memoir, LESSONS FOR THE LIVING: STORIES OF FORGIVENESS, GRATITUDE AND COURAGE AT THE END OF LIFE (Shambhala Publications-Trumpeter imprint). What made it unlikely is that it focuses on end-of-life issues while most other entries dealt with lighter more entertaining topics.

Why was it chosen? The judges said they were “overwhelmed” by the impact the book had on them. Their views mirrored those of one reviewer who wrote that the book “will change the way you live the rest of your life.”
When Stan Goldberg was diagnosed with cancer, he chose to face his fear by helping others who were already in the process of dying: Stan signed up as a hospice volunteer and spent seven years at the bedsides of the terminally ill. In this book, Stan shares the remarkable stories of people he met who were facing the end of life. Their stories shine a light on the human capacity for beauty, insight, forgiveness, and gratitude, as we see how people like us deal with anxiety and sadness with bravery and love.

But what’s especially remarkable is that the bravery and love aren’t as much expressed in grand, dramatic gestures as they are in ordinary acts and small accomplishments: in simple efforts at kindness, in asking for and receiving forgiveness, in the abandonment of anger, and in learning to speak directly from the heart-and to listen in the same way. What Stan ultimately discovers-and shares here-are not lessons in dying, but rather, lessons in learning how to live.

LESSONS FOR THE LIVING became the basis for Stan’s highly acclaimed video series HELPING LOVED ONES TO DIE, which besides being lauded by people preparing to help their loved ones die, is being used in conjunction with his book by hospice training programs around the world.

He will accept the 2009 London Book Festival Grand Prize Award at a gala dinner event in London on January 21.
